TERMS OF REFERENCE
Background
Established in 1959, we are the leading source of development financing for Latin America and the Caribbean, with a strong commitment to achieve measurable results, increased integrity , transparency and accountability . We have an evolving reform agenda that seeks to increase our development impact in the region.
While we are a regular bank in many ways, we are also unique in some key respects. Besides loans, we also provide grants, technical assistance and do research . Our shareholders are 48 member countries , including 26 Latin American and Caribbean borrowing members, who have a majority ownership of the IDB.
The Bank supports clients in the design of projects, and provides financing, technical assistance and knowledge services to support development interventions. The IDB focuses on empirical evidence for making decisions and measuring the impact of these projects to increase its development effectiveness.
Internship objective
The purpose of the Internship program is to provide an opportunity for around 30 university students to learn about the operations of the IDB, and to acquire work experience at the professional level through on-the-job training during their summer vacation before returning to their studies.
Description of Activities
The activities will depend on the department assigned. In general, the functions are related with:
  • Assist with development and editing corporate procedures
  • Assist with cataloguing and developing templates
  • Assist with maintaining the records/files
  • Assist with setting-up a filing system
  • Documentation and classification of test scenarios
  • Assist in researching based on Bank strategies.
  • Support with monitoring compliance of data base
  • Support with administrative duties including updating and organization of electronic files.
  • Other activities as agreed with the internship supervisor.
  • A citizen of one of the Bank's member countries.
  • A current third year student working towards a Bachelor's degree or equivalent graduate program, in an accredited university.
  • Graduation date cannot be prior to March 15th of 2017.
  • Proficient in at least one of the official languages of the Bank (English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French), preferably with a working knowledge of a second one.
  • Has not reached age 31 by January 1st, of 2017 (Age requirement under the diversity initiative is 33)
  • Candidates hired in the past under any employment program of the IDB do not qualify.
  • Family members or close relatives of IDB employees are not eligible. This restriction applies to candidates within and including the 4th degree of consanguinity and the 2nd degree of affinity.
  • Computer Skills: Depending of the specific needs of the department.

Payment and Conditions
  • Interns receive a stipend of an amount that is determined on a yearly basis.
  • Selected candidates are responsible for the costs associated with their relocation to/from Headquarters of the Bank in Washington, DC, as well as for providing proof of medical coverage for the duration of the internship.
  • For non US citizen, the Bank provides support in the process of obtaining a G-IV visa. It will be the responsibility of the student to obtain such visa or work permit. If a candidate cannot obtain a visa/permit to work at the IDB, the internship offer will be canceled.
Consanguinity : Individuals with relatives working for the IDB within, and including the fourth degree of consanguinity and the second degree of affinity are not eligible for internship. Candidates must be citizens of a member country of the Inter-American Development Bank.
