For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.
Background & Rationale
With the impetus spawned by the Sustainable Development Goals and UNICEF's leadership in the area of education and Early Childhood Development (ECD), it is opportune for UNICEF, in collaboration with key partners, to initiate and disseminate a publication focused on early learning. Early learning is an integral component of ECD involving children's education, learning and preparing children for primary school entry so they can be better set up for success (typically around the ages three to five, or the years directly before primary school entry).
The aim of the Early Learning Publication is to promote the importance of early learning as a shared priority for ECD and Education stakeholders and to summarize key messages from recent evidence and available data that can inform ongoing scale up and advocacy efforts. This publication will cover succinctly key issues that relate to ongoing challenges and opportunities in addressing SDG4.2 and offer data-driven/evidence-based advocacy and policy recommendations that can strengthen UNICEF's and other partners' work in this area.
The audience targeted by the publication consists of Partner governments & Ministries of Education, Global partners, Donors, UNICEF country leadership and Education/ECD advisors, and is intended to serve as a hybrid data-driven advocacy brief and guidance document. The content will be primarily focused on data visualization, utilizing dynamic representation and layouts of info-graphics, data and text.
Purpose
The Graphic and Layout Consultant will serve as the graphic designer for the Early Learning Publication (15 -20 pages long), in charge of the design and layout of the publication, such that an appealing, reader-friendly and effective visual representation of the contents is produced for printing and dissemination. In particular, the Graphic and Layout Consultant will perform the following tasks: I) Working closely with and based on the guidelines and/or specifications provided by the Early Learning Specialist and a small reference group, create the design and layout of the Early Learning Publication for printing and dissemination, including: a) Development of various information graphics, figures, tables, charts, information boxes, etc., to creatively and effectively reflect and visualize data and information (which may include statistics; trend analyses, inequality trees, budget information, processes; and any other type of data relating to early learning issues) which will accompany the body text and headlines of the publication. The information graphics and data visuals will compose a significant part of the publication (roughly 60% of the 15-20 page publication).

c) Conceptualize title and end pages for the Early Learning Publication. Select photographs from an online bank of available image to include in the publication
d) Conceptualize (i) font types; (ii) colour selections; (iii) inventive placement and spacing of graphics, and text and headlines (including main titles, sub-titles, captions and sidebars).
e) Implement the lay-out of all contents of the publication, including title/end pages; body text; all graphic designs and information graphics, into a cohesive publication (in booklet form).
ii) Provide technical expert advice with respect to all aspects relating to the design and layout of the Early Learning Publication (for example, font types; colour; size; spacing; value; layout), as well as advice on best approaches in implementing the design and data visualization component of the publication.
