Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
Organizational Setting and Reporting
This post is located in the Documents Management Section (DMS), Intergovernmental Support Service, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Under the supervision of the Chief of DMS, the incumbent performs the following tasks: Responsibilities
- Design print and electronic products for publications, conferences and public information campaigns (e.g. logos, brand identities, books, posters, booklets, brochures, banners, e-publications, web and social media graphics, infographics and pictograms) in the six official languages of the Organization, using currently available IT hardware (PCs, printers, scanners) and professional software such as InDesign CC, Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC and Acrobat CC.
- Analyse the technical specifications given in the job folder or in explicit oral instructions from the supervisor or client, and, in addition to aesthetic considerations, convey the client's message in an appropriate manner.
- Apply graphic arts communication and production methods as required by the assignment, displaying excellent knowledge of production processes.
- Use information provided by the client, create infographics and pictograms to help communicate complex information in a simple manner.
- Provide the client with a visually pleasing model/proof.
- Plan and organize the work, oversee execution of the plans and modify them if necessary. Work independently and at times under pressure.
- Convert and import, using computer applications, all elements (text, images and tables) in electronic or other formats (EPS, TIFF, GIF, JPEG, Word, Excel, Acrobat) that need to be incorporated in the layout.
- Find photographs and illustrations, in the image library or online, that will help to formulate and communicate the client's objectives.
- Ensure proper colour management when handling text or logos and when calibrating standard or digitized images, taking due account of the medium (paper, interactive PDF), printing method (offset or digital) and paper (matt or coated) to be used.
- Layout of publications and other materials.
- Format parliamentary documents in Word, as required, and performed other related duties, as requested by Chief, DMS.
- Professionalism: Knowledge of graphic design; demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions and produce high quality graphic materials for various print and electronic projects (e.g. logos, brand identities, books, posters, booklets, brochures, banners, epublications, web and social media graphics, etc.). Knowledge of typography, layout, photography and color theory. Excellent knowledge of software such as InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of graphic design and/or graphic art; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations; commitment to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all aspects of work.

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Specialized training in Graphic Arts is desirable.
Work Experience
At least five (5) years of experience in the area of graphic design is required, of which preferably at least 6 months within the United Nations System. Experience in preparing publications at an international level is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English or French (both oral and written) and knowledge of the other language is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
