By on November 04, 2016

The story

Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation
in Tanzania (CCBRT) is a locally registered NGO first established in 1994. It is the largest indigenous provider of disability and rehabilitation services in the country. CCBRT aims to empower people with disabilities and their families, improve their quality of life, and ensure access to medical and rehabilitative treatment. Our Eye Department is the most sought after of all CCBRT’s services, seeing between 300-400 patients per day. As one of the three facilities known to consistently offer paediatric ophthalmology surgeries to the general public in Tanzania, demand for high-quality eye services for children is extremely high.
Made possible through the generous support of USAID’s Child Blindness Program (CBP), we are looking for a passionate Paediatric Ophthalmologist to support our clinics, as well as develop and initiate the training of fellows in paediatric ophthalmology.

The role

As Paediatric Ophthalmologist at CCBRT, you will assess, examine and diagnose paediatric patients, managing various and complex ophthalmic conditions and using your sound judgement, with due consideration for both medical and psychological aspects of patient care. You will carry out ophthalmic surgical procedures, showing leadership and strong management skills in all aspects of your work.
The facilitation of learning will be a key part of your role at CCBRT. As part of the USAID CBP programme, two external ophthalmic fellows will be recruited to CCBRT’s Eye Department, for whom you will develop training curricula, teach and develop skills in the field of paediatric ophthalmology. You will participate and contribute to research, departmental and organizational strategy discussions, all the while managing departmental resources, ensuring best practice development and instilling performance excellence. The cohesiveness of the team is key, and you will encourage team building and learning amongst junior staff, and pursue effective cross-departmental communications. Finally, you will liaise with relevant external parties, national and international institutions to promote the work of CCBRT’s paediatric eye department and build key external links.

The candidate

Will ideally have:
·
A Masters’ Degree in Medicine with specialisation in paediatric ophthalmology from a recognised international institution and a sub-specialisation in paediatric ophthalmology
· A minimum of 3 years’ experience in paediatric ophthalmology
· Working experience in sub-Saharan Africa
· Registration with the respective Medical Council
· Some research experience and publication of various research papers in the past three years
· Fluent spoken and written English, and Swahili preferable
